Honeycomb Mosquito Door vs Pleated Net: Benefits and Uses
By Sushil Shinde, Founder & Installation Head, SafeNest · Updated November 2026

What is a honeycomb mosquito door?
It is a mosquito net (machhar jali) made for doors rather than windows. Instead of a flat sheet of mesh, the net is pleated, and the pleats form a honeycomb-like pattern. When you slide the door open, the pleats fold together into a slim stack at the side of the frame. When you slide it shut, they open out again and cover the doorway.
The net runs in a slim aluminium frame fixed to your door frame, with a guide track at the top and bottom. Because each door is a different size, every honeycomb door is made to measure after we measure the opening at the site inspection.
Benefits of a honeycomb mosquito door
Folds away neatly
When you do not need it, the net folds into a slim stack at the side. There is no loose net hanging or flapping in the doorway.
Easy to use many times a day
It slides open and shut in one smooth movement, which suits balcony doors that the family uses all day.
Made for wide openings
Wide balcony doors, French doors and sliding doors are hard to cover neatly with ordinary nets. Pleated and honeycomb doors are designed for them.
Air and light, without mosquitoes
Keep the balcony door open in the evening and during the monsoon, with far fewer mosquitoes coming in, and less need for coils and sprays.
A tidy, modern look
The slim frame blends with aluminium, UPVC and wooden doors, and the pleated mesh looks neat whether it is open or closed.
Simple care
A soft brush and a damp cloth are usually all it needs. Keeping the track free of dust helps it slide smoothly for longer.
Where a honeycomb door works best
- Balcony doors that you open and close many times a day
- French doors and wide double doors
- Sliding glass doors to a balcony or terrace
- Kitchen and utility doors that open onto a duct or service balcony
For windows, a sliding mosquito net on its own track, or a simple velcro or magnetic net, is often the better match. We suggest the right type for each opening at the inspection.
Honeycomb vs pleated mosquito door: what is the difference?
| Type | Best for | Everyday use | Looks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honeycomb pleated door | Balcony, French and sliding doors | Slides open and folds away neatly | Very tidy, open or closed |
| Pleated (plisse) door | Balcony and French doors | Slides open and folds away | Tidy |
| Sliding net | Sliding aluminium windows | Slides on its own track | Neat |
| Roller net | Casement windows | Rolls up when not needed | Neat, needs careful use |
| Velcro or magnetic net | Small windows and rented flats | Peels off for cleaning | Simple |
Why mosquito protection matters in Mumbai and Pune
- Mumbai, 2026: BMC data for 1 January to 15 September 2026 showed 8,723 malaria cases (6,277 in the same period of 2025), 2,656 dengue cases and 80 chikungunya cases. (Free Press Journal, September 2026)
- Pune, 2026: the Pune Municipal Corporation recorded 2,291 dengue-positive cases from 1 January to 20 October 2026, and 2,391 in all of 2025. (Free Press Journal, October 2026)
- Maharashtra, 2025: the state health department recorded 14,159 dengue cases with 21 deaths, and 3,439 chikungunya cases. (Free Press Journal, March 2026)
Mosquito nets on windows and balcony doors are one simple layer of protection, along with removing standing water and following your doctor's and the municipal corporation's advice.
How we measure and fit a honeycomb door
- Free site inspection. We measure the door opening, check the frame and the floor, and show you the frame colours and mesh.
- Materials, quality and price. We propose the frame colour, mesh and quality that suit your door, agree them with you, and then share the price quote by email or WhatsApp.
- Made to measure. After you sign the work order and pay the advance, the door is made to the exact size of your opening.
- Fitting and handover. Our team fits the frame, checks that the net slides smoothly and closes fully, and shows you how to care for it. You pay the balance after the work is delivered.
Care tips
- Brush dust off the mesh with a soft brush once a week, and wipe the frame with a damp cloth.
- Keep the bottom track clean, so sand and dust do not stop the net sliding smoothly.
- Slide the net by its handle, not by pulling the mesh.
- Tell us early if the net stops closing fully, so it can be adjusted.
Honeycomb mosquito door FAQs
What is the difference between a honeycomb door and a pleated mosquito door?
Both are pleated mosquito screens that slide across the opening and fold away to the side. In a honeycomb door the mesh folds into small honeycomb-shaped cells that help it hold its shape across wide balcony and sliding doors, while a standard pleated net uses plain folds and suits windows and smaller doors. We bring samples of both to the inspection.
Can a honeycomb mosquito door be fitted on a sliding door?
Yes, in most cases. We check the frame depth and the space around your sliding door at the inspection and suggest the best way to fit it.
Does a honeycomb door block air flow?
Very little. The mesh is fine enough to keep mosquitoes out but open enough to let air and light through.
Is a honeycomb door suitable for homes with children and pets?
It suits most homes. If you have pets that scratch or climb, tell us at the inspection and we will suggest the most suitable mesh.
How do I clean a honeycomb mosquito door?
Brush the mesh gently with a soft brush, wipe the frame with a damp cloth and keep the bottom track free of dust.
Do you fit honeycomb doors in Mumbai and Pune?
Yes. We fit honeycomb mosquito doors across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, after a free site inspection.
Is a honeycomb mesh door the same as a honeycomb sliding door?
Usually, yes. Shops use names like honeycomb mesh door, honeycomb sliding door and honeycomb pleated mosquito door for the same idea: a pleated mesh screen that slides across a door and folds away to the side. We confirm the exact product and mesh in your quote.
Can a honeycomb door be used for an AC room or as a partition?
The mesh type lets air through, so it is not meant to hold in AC cooling. For AC rooms, kitchens and partitions we fit the honeycomb fabric door, which helps keep cool air in and softens noise. See honeycomb doors.
