What is a honeycomb door?
A honeycomb door is a folding door made of pleated material whose folds form small honeycomb-shaped cells. It runs in a slim aluminium track fixed to the door frame or the wall. Slide it shut and it covers the opening; slide it open and it folds into a narrow stack at the side, so nothing swings into the room or the passage.
There are two main types, and many homes use both:
- Honeycomb fabric door: a pleated fabric with a pocket of air in each cell. It works as a light partition that helps hold AC cool air in a room, keeps kitchen heat and smells in check, and softens noise, dust and light. Fabrics come in light-filtering and room-darkening shades.
- Honeycomb mosquito mesh door (machhar jali door): a pleated insect mesh for balcony, French and sliding doors. It keeps mosquitoes and insects out while air and light come in.
Every honeycomb door is made to measure after we measure the opening at a free site inspection. Interior designers often suggest them for modern flats because they look clean whether open or closed.
Benefits of a honeycomb door
Keeps AC cool air in
Close the fabric door and the AC cools only that room or zone, not the whole flat. The air pockets in the honeycomb cells help hold the cool air in, so the room usually cools faster.
Saves passage space
It folds into a slim stack at the side and needs no swing space. That suits narrow passages, small bedrooms and kitchens where a normal door gets in the way.
Less noise and dust
The fabric helps soften sound from the next room or the road, and cuts down dust and draughts coming through an open doorway.
Mosquitoes stay out
The mesh type lets you keep balcony and French doors open in the evening with far fewer mosquitoes coming in, and less need for coils and sprays.
Light and privacy
Choose a light-filtering fabric for a soft glow, or a room-darkening one for bedrooms and home offices.
A modern, tidy look
Slim frames, neat pleats and a choice of colours that blend with aluminium, UPVC and wooden doors.
Where honeycomb doors work best
- Between the living room and a passage or bedroom, to keep AC cool air where you need it
- Open and semi-open kitchens, to keep cooking heat and smells from spreading
- Balcony, French and sliding doors, with honeycomb mosquito mesh
- Study rooms and home offices that need some quiet and less light
- Wardrobe, store-room and utility openings where a swing door does not fit
- Shops, clinics and offices that need a light partition

Honeycomb door, pleated net, swing door or curtain?
- Honeycomb door vs pleated mosquito net: both fold to the side. A pleated (plisse) net has flat folds, while a honeycomb door has cells that hold their shape and look neater. The fabric type also helps with AC cooling and noise.
- Honeycomb door vs a normal swing door: a swing door needs space to open into. A honeycomb door folds away to the side and fits within the existing opening.
- Honeycomb door vs a curtain: a curtain lets cool air escape at the sides and collects dust. A honeycomb door runs in a track and closes the opening more neatly.

Honeycomb door FAQs
What is a honeycomb door?
A honeycomb door is a folding door made of pleated material with honeycomb-shaped cells. It slides on a slim track and folds into a narrow stack at the side. The fabric type is used as an AC and room partition, and the mesh type as a mosquito door.
Does a honeycomb door keep AC cool air in?
The fabric type is designed for this. Its honeycomb cells hold pockets of air, so when it is closed it helps keep cool air inside the room, and the AC usually does not have to cool the whole flat.
Does a honeycomb door reduce noise?
The fabric type helps soften noise from the next room or the road. It is a light partition, not a soundproof wall, so it reduces noise rather than blocking it fully.
Can I fit a honeycomb door in my kitchen?
Yes. Many homes use one at the kitchen opening to keep cooking heat and smells from spreading. We suggest a fabric that is easy to clean and fit it away from the hob.
Will a honeycomb door keep mosquitoes out?
The mesh type is made for this. It keeps mosquitoes out while air and light come in. The fabric type also keeps mosquitoes out when it is closed, but it blocks the breeze.
Honeycomb door or pleated mosquito net: which is better?
Both fold to the side. A honeycomb door holds its shape and looks neater, and the fabric type also helps with AC cooling and noise. A pleated net is a good, simple choice when you only need mosquito protection. We show you both at the inspection.
Can a honeycomb door be fitted on a sliding or French door?
Yes, in most cases. We check the frame depth and the space around the door at the inspection and suggest the best way to fit it.
Does fitting a honeycomb door need civil work?
Usually not. The track is fixed to the door frame or the wall with screws. If the floor or frame needs any preparation, we tell you at the inspection.
Is a honeycomb door suitable for homes with children and pets?
It suits most homes. It is light and slides by hand. If you have pets that scratch or climb, tell us at the inspection and we will suggest a sturdier mesh or fabric.
How much does a honeycomb door cost?
The price depends on the size of the opening, the type, the fabric or mesh and the frame. We first inspect your site, then propose and agree with you the materials and the type of quality you need, and quote the price accordingly.
Do you install honeycomb doors in Mumbai and Pune?
Yes. We fit honeycomb doors across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, after a free site inspection.
