Invisible Grill vs Normal MS Grill: Which Is Better?
By Sushil Shinde, Founder & Installation Head, SafeNest · Updated November 2026
Short answer: For most flats in Mumbai and Pune we recommend an invisible grill: it resists rust, keeps the view open, is accepted by many societies and costs less than a fabricated MS box grill over 10 years. A normal MS grill is stronger against break-ins, so it still makes sense for ground and first-floor windows.

| Invisible grill (SS316) | Normal MS box grill | |
|---|---|---|
| View and light | Almost unobstructed | Blocked, ‘cage’ look |
| Rust | Resists rust well with genuine SS316 | Rusts; needs painting every 1–2 years |
| Child safety | Yes, with 2-inch gap | Yes |
| Burglar resistance | Moderate | High |
| Fire escape | Easier; openable section possible | Hard to escape through |
| Society / facade rules | Usually allowed | Often banned in new towers |
| Weight on structure | Very light | Heavy |
| Installation | 1 day, little mess | Fabrication + welding + painting |
When a normal grill still makes sense
Ground floor, first floor and windows next to a common corridor or terrace where security from break-ins matters more than view. Many families use a strong grill or a sliding window lock there and invisible grills on upper balconies.
Cost over 10 years
An MS grill is cheaper on day one, but repainting, rust repairs and eventual replacement in coastal Mumbai usually cost more than a one-time SS316 invisible grill. In Pune's drier climate the rust gap is smaller, but the view and society-approval advantages remain.
