Pigeon Net vs Pigeon Spikes vs Gel: What Actually Stops Pigeons?
By Sushil Shinde, Founder & Installation Head, SafeNest · Updated November 2026
Short answer: A properly tensioned pigeon net is the only method that fully closes a balcony, window or duct to pigeons. Spikes work on narrow ledges and AC tops where birds perch but do not nest. Gels and reflective tape work briefly at best. An invisible grill alone does not stop pigeons.

| Method | Works for | Effectiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Pigeon net | Balconies, windows, ducts, open areas | Very high: full exclusion |
| Bird spikes | Ledges, AC tops, parapets, signboards | High for perching, not for open spaces |
| Gel / tape / CDs | Small ledges | Low, short-lived |
| Invisible grill only | Child safety | Does not stop pigeons |
Many families combine an invisible grill for safety with a transparent pigeon net behind it, and spikes on the AC outdoor unit.
